PTAs Can Solve The PT Labor Shortage

The PT labor shortage is a huge problem yet we’re overlooking one of the industry’s greatest resources:

PTAs.

Instead of making it harder for PTAs to thrive—slashing reimbursement, limiting their role, and offering little upward mobility—we should be doing the opposite.

We should be investing in them and their work experience.

What if PTA-to-DPT bridge programs were shorter, more accessible, and built to reward hands-on experience?

What if PTAs were incentivized, not sidelined, to take on greater responsibility? What if we stopped treating them as assistants and started treating them as the skilled professionals they are?

If we’re serious about solving the PT labor crisis, the answer isn’t just “more DPTs.” It’s smarter utilization of the workforce we already have.

✅ Advocate for fair PTA reimbursement—cutting pay only pushes talent away.
✅ Create faster, experience-based pathways to DPT.
✅ Expand the PTA’s role to maximize patient care and clinic efficiency.

The solution is right in front of us. It’s time to rethink how we value PTAs.
